Fun Facts about Broadway’s Wicked

Wicked has returned to its birthplace and to celebrate its homecoming in the Bay area, here are some fun facts you ought to know about the popular Broadway hit.

  • Wicked is a musical adaptation of a novel by Gregory Maguire, which in turn is a parallel novel to the classic story, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
  • Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth starred as Elphaba and Glinda respectively, back in 2003 when Wicked officially made its world premiere in San Francisco.
  • Elphaba is a name that came from the initials of the Wizard of Oz author, L. Frank Baum.
  • The actress playing as the emerald-green skinned wicked witch, Dee Roscioli, in SHN’s current production is a record-holder in her own right; having performed more than 1,000 times already.
  • Joel Grey has replaced Robert Morse in the key role of the Wizard of Oz prior to the musical’s eventual Broadway run.
